In Brazil the main language is Portuguese. All of the other countries that surround Brazil speak Spanish.
The reason Brazil speaks Portuguese is because when South America was found, it was divided by Spain and Portugal.
When South America was discovered the land was split by the Pope. A line was set called the Line of Demarcation. Portugal would receive lands East of the line and Spain would gain lands West of the line. Portugal did not completely follow this line and so they expanded towards the inland of South America. This area that was explored became Brazil.
There are still many people that do speak Spanish. These People usually border a Spanish speaking Country.
